The sign was first illuminated on December 8, 1923, and originally said “Hollywoodland” to advertise an upscale housing developing in the city. Ex-agent, abductee kin to meet soon: S. Korea foreign minister

TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows former North Korean agent Kim Hyon Hui who arrived in Gimpo airport in South Korea in December 1987 after being arrested for her involvement in the fatal bombing of a South Korean airliner. South Korean Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Yu Myung Hwan said Feb. 11 that Kim can soon meet with the relatives of Japanese woman Yaeko Taguchi, who is believed to have taught Japanese to Kim in North Korea after being abducted to the secretive country in 1978. North Korea said Taguchi already died but her family members say they do not believe it and have long called for information about her whereabouts.

Masayoshi Ohira

Bureaucrat-turned politician who was prime minister between Dec. 7, 1978 and June 12, 1980. Born on March 12, 1910 in Kagawa Prefecture, Ohira joined the Finance Ministry in 1936. He was elected to the House of Representative in 1952. As foreign minister, Ohira was instrumental in normalizing diplomatic relations between Japan and China in 1972. He became prime minister in December 1978 but suddenly died in June 1980 during the campaign for general elections. Photo was taken on March 15, 1978.
